Many people think that pharmaceuitical and medical device companies only make drugs or medical devices, but that is not true. There are in fact many companies that produce medicines and medical devices for everyday use. For example, Abbott Laboratories produces
nutritional drinks such as Ensure, Pediaure and Glucerna are all developed by Abbott Laboratories.
Abbot Laboratories, founded in 1888 by Dr. Wallace C. Abbott, a practicing physician, started out as a small pharmacy that produced and distributed alkaloidal drugs such as morphine and codeine. Dr. Abbott’s pharmacy was successful because he formed this powerful medication into miniature pills which he called dosimetric granules. This method produced more consistent and effective dosages for patients. Today, Abbott Laboratories has grown tremendously and has facilities around the world.
One great device developed by Abbott Laboratories is the Freestyle Blood Glucose monitoring system. This small portable device helps people with diabetes check their glucose levels whenever and wherever necessary. The meter is small and compact and fits into the palm of the hand. However, despite being small, it has a large and easy to read display screen. A person just needs to prick a finger and load a drop of blood into the test strip and then insert the test strip in the meter. The meter will display the results in as little as five seconds. This meter also features a built in alarm to alert you if your glucose is too high or too low. The Freestyle Blood Glucose monitoring system is available over the counter in almost any pharmacy or drug store nationwide. The Test strips are sold separately over the counter as well. Abbott Laboratories sells diabetic devices that are low-cost, convenient and accurate.
If you would like to work with Abbott Laboratories and their technologies, they offer students internship opportunities and careers. They also have several locations in California. Click here to see their careers page.
