Johnson and Johnson

Have you ever wandered if Johnson & Johnson made any products besides baby shampoo and skin care products?  You may not know this but Johnson & Johnson is also a leading manufacture of medical devices.

The company was formed in 1886, by three brothers Robert, James and Edward Johnson in New Brunswick, New Jersey. After numerous of great inventions, including the first ever commercial first aid kit, dental floss, first aid manuals, adhesive bandages, disposable eye contacts and Tylenol for children, the company expanded its headquarters to Mexico, South Africa, Australia, china and Egypt.

In 1994, Johnson & Johnson licensed The PALMAZ-SCHATZ stent, the first coronary stent which revolutionized cardiology. Before this stent the leading treatment for a clogged artery consisted of invasive bypass surgery, in which a healthy blood vessel from another part of the body is implanted onto the coronary artery, forming a detour around the afflicted region, however this procedure was very risky and costly. The patients had to recover from two surgeries rather than one. The PALMAZ-SCHATZ stent, which consisted of a stainless steel, insert able wire mesh that could be expanded like a balloon once inside the body, to hold a blood vessel or artery open and allow blood to flow more freely. This method was safer, inexpensive and had a low to no chance of a relapse. Within four years of its approval, the balloon-expandable stent was used in over 80 percent of coronary surgeries. Currently, the PALMAZ-SCHATZ is the preferred treatment method for clogged arteries and over one million are implanted annually around the world.
